VIKINGS TO CUT CHRIS KLUWE -
The self-proclaimed best punter in Minnesota Vikings history is expected to be released soon, this according to multiple sources. Unless rookie fifth-round pick Jeff Locke absolutely tanked at rookie minicamp over the weekend, the team has publicly indicated that Chris Kluwe will be let go.Kluwe’s age, salary, skills, and possibly his outspoken nature are all reasons as to why the team is letting him go. There’s an old-school rule among players that says ‘punters are seen, not heard.’ But Kluwe is very vocal about his beliefs, and we respect him for putting fourth his opinion."I think the sacrifice would be worth it," Kluwe told Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune. "Now, I would hope that I would get the chance to play football again, because I think I can still play. But if it ends up being something that costs me that position, I think making people aware of an issue that is causing children to commit suicide is more important than kicking a leather ball."Kluwe is referring to his view on same-sex marriage, and issue he’s been extremely vocal about in recent months. He is coming out with a book later this year and says it’s ridiculous how Vikings coaches, among others, got on his case about having other interests."When I’m at the facility, I’m concentrating 100 percent on my job because that’s what I’m being paid to do," Kluwe said. "But when I’m away from the facility, I’m no longer at my job. I get to live my life. This idea that you have to spend 24 hours a day thinking about your job frankly is unhealthy. It’s insane."Kluwe’s punting average is very good, and we expect that he’ll find work soon as a punter in the NFL if the Vikings do let him go. If a team is willing to overlook a criminal background on a talented player, why wouldn’t they overlook a player’s beliefs too? (Photo via TwinCities.com)
