BUCS SURVIVE “MONSOON” GAME VS CHIEFS, WIN THE NFC CENTRAL FOR THE FIRST TIME:

The Bucs started off their fourth season on the right note by beating the Detroit Lions 31-16 at Tampa Stadium to start the season with a win. The Bucs would go on to win their first five games, becoming the story of the season. However, the team would start to struggle and their playoff hopes sat in jeopardy entering the final week of the season with an 8-7 record.

Playing in a torrential downpour in Tampa the Bucs beat the Kansas City Chiefs 3-0 to win the NFC Central with a 9-7 record. Among the stars of the surprise season was Running Back Ricky Bell who rushed for 1,263 yards, and Defensive End Lee Roy Selmon who Defensive Player of the Year.

In their first playoff game in Bell was the star again scoring two Touchdowns and rushing for 142 yards as the Bucs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-17 at Tampa Stadium. Just two years after ending their 26-game losing streak the Bucs were facing the Los Angeles Rams at Tampa Stadium for a trip to the Super Bowl. However, the Bucs were washed away losing the NFC Championship Game 9-0 in the rain.
